Sue Bruen and Anne Rooke

Peanut butter and jelly, bacon and eggs, Mickey and Minnie - think of pairs that naturally go together and you can’t help but think of Sue Bruen and Anne Rooke! WAMMC has been fortunate to have this Dynamic Duo in our membership for more than three decades. During that time these sisters, from Rochester, New York, have followed the WAMMC Mission by Contributing With Passion. Daughters of a surgeon and an OR nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, they along with a sister and a brother, had parents who set fine examples of service to the health care community. They grew up feeling part of the hospital and understanding the importance of volunteerism. Sue graduated from Marquette University where she majored in Journalism and Psychology and then on to Rochester Institute of Technology for her MBA while working at Burroughs in her hometown; first in public relations and then in marketing/communications. Anne pursued a career in nursing with a BSN from Boston College and an MSN from the University of Pennsylvania. While working at her first position as a staff nurse in Cardiology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Anne met Bob Rooke. Bob was a Morristown guy and had graduated from Pingry along with his good friend Bill Bruen. Are you starting to see where this is heading? Anne and Bob married in 1982 and moved to Morris Township and Anne began working at Morristown Memorial Hospital(MMH) as Director of Cardiac Rehab. They introduced Sue to Bill, which proved to be a perfect match. The Bruens married in 1984 and shortly after that both couples started their families. It was as young mothers that Sue and Anne realized they needed to become more active and the local hospital was a natural starting place. They saw a need to keep the Women's Association of MMH as it was in those years, vital by adding new members. Their own mother’s involvement with her group at St. Mary’s was a model and they took the initiative and formed the Morris Township Twig. This group of their friends brought together young women who shared similar interests. They both fondly recall many events in those early years that involved fundraising by the Township Twigs. A Silent Auction as part of a sailing trip around Manhattan called Anchors Away, Playhouses on Parade where seven children’s playhouses were displayed at the Armory and auctioned off, and Dancing at the Mansion that raised seed money for Mansion in May Upton Pyne Revisited in 1991 and Bayley Ellard in 1994. Sue and Anne have been involved in many aspects of Morristown Medical Center and WAMMC. Anne was a very active member of the Atlantic Health System (AHS) Board of Trustees from 2008-2019. Both women have served as Presidents of WAMMC and on the Executive Board for years. Sue’s first Board job was Program Chair in 1994 when the organization was celebrating its centennial anniversary. She had the idea to invite past Presidents to participate in a roundtable discussion. Sue was able to gather eight former WAMMC presidents for an event held in the Conservatory at the Madison Hotel that was an enormous success. Their accomplishments as fundraisers, particularly with leadership roles on many Mansions in May, are unsurpassed. One of their earliest shared responsibilities was Co-Chairing the Volunteers Committee at Bayley Ellard in 1994. With their own youngsters in school, they alternated school pick up and feeding of all four children while the other worked at the Mansion. They were in charge of Admissions at the Vail Mansion, the Preview Party at Knox Hill, and developed the concept of private parties at the Cross Estate and the Ross Family Farm. Private parties continue to be popular as part of the Mansion month. Sue and Anne were Co-Chairs of the 2010 Mansion at Fawn Hill. When Anne joined the AHS Board, Sue began her role in Operations on the next six Mansions. Asked if there are any challenges in working with your sister, Anne said that it is hard to say no to Sue and that is how she became involved with Operations and the search for the next Mansion. They recognize many people who have assisted in the search process, both formally and informally, including Barry Thomson and Michele and David Hedley. Their Operations job is inspired by the work of former and current Operation Committee members including Eleanor Doda, Joan Powell, Beth Wipperman, and Margaret and Bill Clossey. As Co-chair of the Long Range Planning Committee with Carla Suskin, Anne's leadership role continues as they look to a strong future for WAMMC. Sue is Chair of the Mansion Search Committee and her success in that position will once again be on display in Mansion in May 2025. In addition, Sue and Anne are Co-Chairs of Sponsorships and In Kind Donations, a concept they have developed. How fortunate we are to have Sue Bruen and Anne Rooke who are dedicated, hard-working and devoted WAMMC members with both history and vision.

Hope Hazen

In an area where there are many transplants, it is refreshing to meet a true native. Hope Hazen grew up in the Morristown area, and even though her life has taken her to live in other parts of the world, such as India, she raised her family and still resides where she grew up in the New Vernon home her parents built. With that history, Hope has always been active in the community, including her time as a Candy Striper at Morristown Memorial Hospital. She was a charter member of the New Vernon First Aid squad that is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. Hope is a member of the New Vernon Fire Company Auxiliary. It is the great fortune of WAMMC that Hope has been an active member for over 50 years! This coincides with 50 years of Mansion in May and Hope has volunteered at all twenty mansions. She enjoyed the early days working on the Preview Parties, which were black tie events. Hope was Chair of Designer Sales at Evergreens in 1986. Lately, she has enjoyed being a docent because she loves the opportunity to interact with people and is looking forward to serving in that capacity once again at Wildfair in 2025. Hope represented the Worth New York Clothing Collection with clothing shows four times each year in her home for 26 years until her retirement. She loves spending time with her family, including five grandchildren ranging in ages 7–22. Hope is a passionate gardener in her New Vernon flower and vegetable gardens that rival those of Ina and Martha. She is a proud member of the Garden Club of Morristown. She and her husband, Bruce, have been members of the St. Peter’s Church Choir for over 40 years. Hope has enjoyed her years with WAMMC which she refers to as a wonderful “core group of movers and shakers” who are talented and also successful at bringing in new members. We salute Hope for her dedication to our community and look forward to seeing her at Wildfair. Hope Hazen is pictured top right serving as docent at MIM 2023 at Three Fields in the Tulip Award winning room, “Moor and Mountains,” designed by Sam Ciardi, Samuel Robert Signature Spaces.

Judy Heeb and Janet McMillan

They have been friends for many years and have shared memories of ski trips with their families and golfing at Mendham Golf Club, but one of the dearest memories Judy Heeb and Janet McMillan share is the Mansion in May in 1991 when they were Co-Chairs of Upton Pyne Revisited. At the 2025 Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens, Judy and Janet continued to get involved as volunteers in Operations as they looked back fondly to what it was like 34 years ago. Both Judy and Janet were members of WAMMH and had experience volunteering at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Judy was a courier and worked in the gift shop. Janet was involved with childcare and preschool dating back to the days of All Souls Hospital that later became the Mt. Kemble division of Morristown Memorial. They had also volunteered in various areas at previous Mansions and had an idea of the responsibility that came with Co-Chairing this signature fundraiser when approached by Joan Mezzocapo and Jane Clow who thought the two friends would be perfect for the job. Without much hesitation, they said yes! When asked what were the biggest MIM challenges they faced, they agreed that having no easy means of communication in those days meant that they had to have runners take messages from place to place. They also said that WAMMH (now WAMMC) was responsible for all of the Mansion necessities such as hiring yellow school buses for shuttling, dumpsters, and security guards. They each have a photo album, created and gifted by Eleanor Doda, that includes pictures of Judy and Janet in the dumpster stomping down boxes, or with their trusty plungers at the Port-a-John. But there was also celebrating as in the picture shown below and plenty of rewards and wonderful memories. Judy and Janet speak fondly of their friend, Michele Hedley, who organized the Preview Party at Upton Pyne Revisited and they both smile when they recall that special evening. Judy and Janet have made many friends as a result of their work with WAMMC and MIM. They continue to enjoy volunteering with the many friends they have made over the years. They proudly wear the charm they received for their work at Upton Pyne Revisited and the tulip scarf that represents Mansion in May. Judy and Janet loved Wildfair. They toured it with a true appreciation of the work that goes into this massive endeavor. They are happy to now leave it to others to jump on a box or two in the dumpster!

Anne Herbert

She’s the Grand Dame of the Grand Raffle and has earned that nickname honestly. Anne Herbert has co-chaired highly successful raffles for four major WAMMC fundraising events beginning with the Bluegrass Bash in 2019, as well as the 2023 Mansion in May at Three Fields when that raffle raised a record $82,000! Anne has had lots of experience in fundraising with non-profit charities and at the schools her two sons attended. Much of this success can be attributed to Anne who has a winning personality and thoroughly enjoys interacting with people. Anne’s connection to MMC is deep. Her sons were both born there, as were four of her five grandchildren. Her late husband spent his last days in hospice care at MMC and the Herbert family is grateful for the wonderful care that he received. Anne continues to show her gratitude by returning to the hospice unit every December to set up a tree as part of WAMMC's holiday decorating. When Michelle Meszaros suggested that Anne might like to become a member of WAMMC, she was ready and jumped in with both feet. She has found the members to be cohesive, hardworking and dedicated to the WAMMC Mission and encourages new members to get involved. In addition to the raffles, Anne is also at the helm of the Madison Avenue Art Gallery. When she was asked to chair that program with Paula Long, there was no a standardized system in place. They developed a Mission Statement, guidelines and procedures and revised the legal contractual agreement for artists who sign on to display their works. The committee has recently expanded to eight members, which Anne prefers because it makes selecting artists a group effort. The exhibits that change every six weeks are always a topic of discussion and sales of the artwork have increased. You can look forward to more exciting exhibits in the main entrance hallway by all of the upcoming artists that have been scheduled for remainder of 2025 and 2026. Anne enjoys travel and skiing, especially with family. Sharing those moments with her grandchildren has led to her pleasure in creating photo books for each grandchild as a birthday gift every year. You will find her at Wildfair almost every day in May, either at the raffle table in the Café or walking around - doing what she loves to do which is talking with guests. By her own admission, she is a salesperson at heart and the success of raffle ticket sales supports that claim. It brings her joy to notify the winners, hearing their stories and sharing their reactions. Anne Herbert brings joy and a positive energy to any endeavor and that makes WAMMC the big winner.

Dee Perez.pub.png

Dee Perez

When Dee Perez returned to Morristown, her niece Christie encouraged her to join WAMMC—and we’re so glad she did! Dee jumped right into the 2023 Mansion in May, lending her tech expertise to the Underwriting Committee and raffle database, while also contributing to the Designer Sales team. She continued that same dedication during MIM 2025 and most recently co-hosted the Social Group’s popular “Lunch and a Movie.” Dee has quickly become an invaluable part of our community. Dee is a Morristown native and grew up in the area where her family owned a flower business. She loved spending time in their Millburn flower shop and still enjoys making floral arrangements. Her professional career included many Human Resources positions, retiring as the Director of Equal Employment and Diversity. Upon retirement, Dee and her husband moved to Boca Raton where she volunteered with the Historical Society of Boca Raton. There she was involved with the Gift Shop and fundraising. Returning to Morristown, she has put her technology skills to great use for WAMMC. Dee assisted the Underwriting team in recording and maintaining informational records of sponsor donations. After Three Fields, she was asked to develop a data base to capture information of thousands of raffle ticket buyers. She has utilized her skills with more advanced technology to help make record keeping easier. Most recently, Dee and fellow WAMMC member, Anne Herbert hosted a very successful “Lunch and a Movie” for the newly created Social Group. Dee’s interests include boating, traveling and cruising abroad, and entertaining family and friends. Reflecting on her time with WAMMC, Dee recalls how much she enjoyed working in Designer Sales because of all the interesting people she met. She especially enjoyed updating the inventory data every morning and talking with the designers. Her advice to new members is to get involved. She appreciates that in WAMMC there is an opportunity to interact with professional and dedicated members while making new friends and being a part of a dynamic organization. WAMMC is definitely grateful to have Dee as such a valuable asset and we thank Christie for bringing her Aunt Dee to WAMMC

Valery Rainal

Growing up in Morristown, Valery Rainal was aware of the Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Garden events that the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center has produced 20 times since 1976. She even attended some of them, including Bayley Ellard in 1994 where she had gone to high school. However, it was when she retired after 40 years with Macy’s, that she noticed an opportunity to volunteer at Three Fields, the site of Mansion in May 2023. As Group Vice President for Stores’ Finance with Macy’s, Valery enjoyed working with managers and buyers to make a difference. She is a people person and becoming a docent at Three Fields seemed like a perfect fit. She volunteered three times a week, happily moving to wherever she was needed in the house. She laughs when she recalls one day making it to the Front Door position! She got to know Marcia Wolfson, Kathy King and Carla Suskin as they coordinated the volunteers and when Marcia encouraged her to join WAMMC, she did. When she was approached by President Dale Scolnick at the 2023 Winter Luncheon and asked if she would be interested in getting involved in the Tech Information area, she agreed and to the benefit of WAMMC has been “cleaning up the data base” and setting up various portals to make access easier. She enjoys helping the members become more comfortable with the IT changes. Valery is impressed with the members’ interest in advancing their tech skills. Anyone who works with her will find that she is a patient teacher. Valery's personal time is spent in pursuits that interest her including a complete renovation of the house where she grew up and now lives with her significant other, Dwayne. She enjoys cooking, going to theater and other live events. As Chair of Ticket Sales for Wildfair, Valery is in charge of working with ThunderTix in setting up ticketing and reporting the number of tickets sold online from December through April 30. When the Mansion opens in May, she will be problem solving any tickets issues that arise. You may even find her welcoming guests at the front door!

Julie Skinner.jpg.png

Julie Skinner

Julie Skinner has been a valuable member of the Women’s Association since 2016, including writing the Member Spotlight column for the eVoice. Today, we are thrilled to turn the spotlight on Julie and celebrate her contributions. Julie started her volunteer journey working at the Goryeb Hospital’s information desk and in the Café at Mansion in May. Her 24-year career as a teacher at The Peck School connected her with several members of the Women’s Association, who encouraged Julie to get more involved and officially join WAMMC after her retirement. Julie serves on the WAMMC Board and is actively involved in a wide range of committees. She is the hospital liaison for Healing Services. In that capacity, she works with Nurse Management to present awards to nurses and staff on behalf of WAMMC. Julie led the project for our first-ever children’s book, Our Starry Wishes, developed and produced by WAMMC and Calling All Kids. She is also on the Membership Committee and was co-chair of the 2025 Mansion in May Raffle Committee. Julie has made many friends at the Women’s Association and is inspired by the variety and talent of the women she works alongside, making her volunteer experience both fulfilling and enjoyable. Outside of volunteering, Julie loves traveling, baking and spending time with her five grandchildren. Julie’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, community and the joy of giving back. We are proud to have her as a shining example of volunteerism within the Women’s Association.
